Original Members Wanted!

The “Online Manyoshu” Kamakura Group

A contemporary Manyoshu includes television dramas and song lyrics

Kamakura was once a town of writers, alive with romance and drama. Now, in the online age, anyone with talent can work on a global stage. Outstanding works of song, film and performing arts will be reviewed and uploaded to the “Online Manyoshu.” This is a project unique in Japan, with an application pending at the Japan Patent Office. We planned it to share Japanese culture of dignity and quality with the world.

  • Twice a month. Individual activities will begin in August; meeting days will be decided progressively, with the full programme beginning in October.
  • A convivial meal will be followed by readings, conversation and presentations of new work.
  • You can hear professionals speak about their struggles, and bring lyrics, musical compositions and poetry to the “Online Manyoshu” or to CD.

Dates and venue

During the coronavirus disruption, you may join even if you can participate only online.
Activities will begin individually in August, but from October meetings will be brought together on Wednesdays or Sundays.

  • Meetings will take place at “Café Ethica” (カフェ・エチカ), 2F, 1-4-32 Yukinoshita, Kamakura. Telephone: 0467-23-7292. The interior has something of the atmosphere of a Jazz Age speak easy.
  • Directions: from JR Kamakura Station, walk straight along Komachi Street, with its red torii gate. Just beyond the church on your left, the café is on the second floor of a wooden building resembling a traditional townhouse. Although it is a café, it also has a variety of books.
  • The proprietor of Café Ethica works in theatre and has plenty to say about literature and the arts, making it a thoroughly welcoming place.

How we meet and what makes us distinctive: a seminar that welcomes original work more than established works

  • More advanced members will mainly pursue creative work with considerable freedom; beginners will receive instruction starting with the craft of writing.
  • Once the membership has come together, members will bring copies of their own work for group readings.
  • In writing poetry, moving the heart comes first. Cherish the emotional quality associated with 星野哲郎.
  • The instructor has years of experience being trained by 大久保房男, the celebrated editor-in-chief at Kodansha.

Fees and how to join: a reduced rate for members who join during the campaign!

  • The membership fee is ¥3,000 per month. The monthly fee for an Original member is ¥2,000.
  • You can become a member even if you live far away. What matters is whether you can create good work.

To join, contact the office: 090-2735-7495 or [email protected]

  • Office: Online Manyoshu Editorial Office, Isshiki, Hayama, Kanagawa 240-0111. Further details in person.
  • Accommodation: an “International Exchange House” is available in Yokosuka. Please telephone for details.
