Composed at Misaki Harbour
At Misaki Harbour, invited by the Misaki White Autumn Society, I compose these poems.
President of the Japanese Romantic Society Seishu Hamano
The world of Japan is now in turmoil, with the assassination of Prime Minister Abe and the subsequent state funeral. The world is in danger due to the Ukraine war. Yet, at the tip of Miura Peninsula, at Misaki Harbour, I was invited by the local White Autumn Society to join their boat outing, in memory of the poet Hakutaka Shiro. This is the great kindness of a lonely life.
The sea at the site is calm. On the boat, the president of the Miura Short Song Society, Mr. Mitsutaka Mishima, gave a wonderful performance of Hakutaka Shiro's works, and the romantic spirit of Hakutaka Shiro was revived. On the way back, I naturally composed songs.
I composed six poems at Misaki.
Arriving at Misaki Harbour by car. The driver was Mr. Hiroshi Kawai, the vice-president, and the passenger was Ms. Masami Iwama, who is of the same lineage as Miura. Arrival was just as dusk approached, and I composed this poem first.
Where is the master of Misaki as dusk approaches?
Accompanied by sorrow, now return home.
At this moment, a boat departs from the pier.
Waiting on the boat to see the sun set, the waves of Misaki are calm and full.
The boat is filled with poets, and the local choir group, led by teachers and students, sings the song 'Rain at Jogashima' composed by Hakutaka Shiro, bringing the boat to life.
The beach of Misaki, where Hakutaka Shiro once sang, is lively.
The willow river speaks, perhaps only I.
Continuing Mr. Mishima's lecture, I forgot the passing of time and returned to the boat. Then, the young girl in a yukata.
The white waves, swirling and dancing, speak to the girl in a yukata.
Meeting is the beginning of parting. After expressing my thanks, I became a passenger on the car.
The sea still sways with its white waves, madly.
As dusk approaches, I leave Misaki.
Thinking back, was today also a dream? How cruel the European war has been. Will our country also be disturbed?
Without ceasing my sorrow, I drove on.
After the distant sound of the tide from Misaki, I drove into the darkness.
These six poems are spontaneous tankas composed on the way. In the car, both Mr. Kawai and Ms. Iwama also composed excellent spontaneous poems. I hope that the participants who rode with me will also compose songs for the 'Online Man'yashū' collection.
2022.10.3 Grateful for the good day.
Songs composed in memory of Hakutaka Shiro at Misaki.
Vice President of the Japanese Romantic Society Hiroshi Kawai
The event to commemorate Hakutaka Shiro, which had been postponed due to the pandemic, was held on October 2, 2022, with sufficient infection prevention measures. It was a rare experience to tour the places where Hakutaka Shiro's works were set, by boat with detailed explanations. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the organizers, the Misaki White Autumn Society, and all the related participants.
Six poems composed at Misaki.
A song monument of Hakutaka Shiro stands on the beach at the foot of Jogashima Bridge. According to Mr. Mitsutaka Mishima's explanation, the monument was built in Showa 24 and moved to its current location in Showa 35. The verse from 'Rain at Jogashima' engraved on the monument is in Hakutaka Shiro's own handwriting.
Composing a poem while looking at the song monument shaped like a sail from the sea.
The port town where Hakutaka Shiro's poetic soul resides.
A poetic monument standing like a sail guarding the sea.
Traveling by boat around Misaki Bay. The sea is calm. There are also photos of Hakutaka Shiro with a calm expression on the boat. In ancient Chinese thought, life is divided into four seasons: youth, summer, autumn, and winter. Composing a poem on this autumn day, thinking of life.
After the summer, the waves and winds have calmed, and I go out to sea toward Hakutaka Shiro.
The local choir association's members sang 'Rain at Jogashima.' I listened for a while.
Even the birds that fly in the clear autumn sky seem to be listening to the song.
The boat passes through the red and white lighthouse at the entrance of the harbor and enters the open sea. The sea remains calm.
After the bright red lighthouse, I set sail into the Sagami Sea.
The sun set a little earlier than expected, but the sea, illuminated by the sunset, shone in golden hues with solemnity. For some reason, I thought of my hometown sea. Even if it is not as beautiful as this, it is still the sea of my hometown that spreads in my heart.
As I go out to sea on an autumn evening, the traveler thinks of home in the shining waves.
Happy times pass quickly. Returning to the dock, people are sparse and the shops are closed. The silence after the festival. Everyone finishes their journey and returns home.
The people of Misaki, departing into the dusk, are watched silently by two crows.
Hakutaka Shiro, who loved Misaki, spent about ten months there. It was not a long time. After many things, he arrived at Misaki, where his wounded heart was healed by the scenery and people of Misaki.
Even today, more than a hundred years later, Hakutaka Shiro is still loved by the people of Misaki. This is because his poems and tankas continue to live in the hearts of the people. I have re-realized the power of literature.

Thinking of Hakutaka Shiro in Misaki
Japanese Romantic Society Masami Iwama
On a calm autumn day, I sang of the happiness of hearing a beautiful choir from the boat at the White Autumn Festival, under the open sky.
White autumn, at the end of the clouds where the cloud dwellers reside.
He sings and plays freely, leisurely.
The straight line formed by the reflection of the sunset on the sea looked like a path created by the light for the sun goddess to visit the White Autumn Festival, divine and majestic.
A path of light was made for the sun goddess to visit Hakutaka Shiro.
On a perfect autumn day, I composed a poem while bowing to the monument of Hakutaka Shiro, illuminated by the sunset.
The quiet sea, as if sleeping on an autumn day.
The monument of Hakutaka Shiro, with the sunset as its companion.
Singing in honor of the eternal memory of the people of Misaki for Hakutaka Shiro, who has been cherished for generations.
The people of Misaki, whose hearts are as wide as the sea.
The feast of Hakutaka Shiro is at its peak now.
Since Hakutaka Shiro visited the place of Jogashima, which is not elsewhere, at least on the day commemorating him, we should also visit Jogashima.
White autumn's sorrow remains in Jogashima.
At least, visit Jogashima on a clear autumn day.
After getting off the boat, a group of dazzling girls, in their prime, passed by, singing of the dazzling beauty of the moment.
Even more than the degree of visibility on an autumn day, the girls' path along the beach of Misaki.
